I may not be a famous author (yet!) like Dan Brown of Da Vinci Code fame but we do have a least one thing in common and that is a fascination of symbols. So let me pose you a question, what do Hubpages, the United States Department of Transportation the Isle of Man and Star Trek all have in common? The answer is the triskelion.
So what you may ask is a triskelion. It is an ancient Celtic symbol which is often reproduced with three legs or limbs or spirals. The symbol has to have a three fold rotational symmetry but no dissecting lines of symmetry. The picture reproduced above is the Manx triskelion which is constructed from three spurred armoured legs joined together.
If you now look at the Hubpages logo you can see that ignoring the different colors the logo has a three fold symmetry without any dissecting line of symmetry. The seal of the Department of Transportation is constructed from three commas and also fits these criteria. The Star Trek link is a bit of a red herring. There is an episode called “The Gamesters of Triskelion” from the second season of the original (and best) Star Trek series.
So now to look a little deeper in to the meanings which have been attributed to this symbol. Three is a number which is considered to be a number of good fortune and it is also linked to creative power and growth. Because of the link to the number three the symbol has become associated with almost anything that has a threefold representation and a lot of these associations have a continuity or a cycle to them such as
Land, sea and sky
Mind Body and Soul
Past Present and Future
Birth life and death
The three trimesters of pregnancy
The three phases of the moon
Given that Hubpages was set up by three men, Paul Edmondson, Jay Reitz and Paul Deeds and the purpose for which Hubpages was set up a logo linked to the power of three, good fortune and creative power and growth could not have been more appropriate.
Was this by design or by accident?

What fascinating information! I had no idea. You are quite the observer. Welcome the Hub Pages Community.
Interesting hub Amber, I love symbols, mystery and the meaning behind things too. I like your take on this, lets hope a member of the team does pop in to confirm.
This is soooo interesting. I love a bit of food for thought. You have such great hubs. I'm a loyal fan now, by the way!
Pretty Cool!!
It is funny how you can do something so many times and not notice. You find the mysteries in life others seem to miss.Very interesting thought and I hope some day soon we find out the answer?
The secrets are still hidden.I have found so much fun on the hub pages in such a short time.
Very interesting hub, I didn't know this type of symbolism was called Triskelion. Looks like HubPages team have dropped the logo for the font instead :(
I lived on the mainland near the Isle of Man for years. I never worked out what the symbol was for there either.
so does use of the symbol add mystical elements to the asphalt the DOT may use? Kidding! Fascinating Hub. I guess it would make an interesting interview to see how Hubpages came up with the logo.
Very interesting Amber. You have given me much to think about. I love a good puzzle. I wonder if we will ever know the answer.
Wow, you really made me think about something I never noticed. Thanks for a great education about the triskelion.
really very interesting!

An interesting question about the hubpages logo design, I've never thought of it the way that you described, I wonder if the hubpages trio would care to comment!?
